Mayor Oliver Gilbert is a graduate of Florida A&M University and the University of Miami School of Law, where he graduated with honors.

Shortly after law school graduation, he began his career in government and politics serving as the Legislative Aide for State Representative Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall. From the State Representative’s Office to serve as the Deputy of Policy for Florida State Gubernatorial Candidate Janet Reno, Oliver’s quick wit, smarts, and infectious smile caught the attention of all those who encountered him.

Upon completion of the gubernatorial race, Oliver was appointed Assistant State Attorney in the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, before returning to serve in his beloved hometown after it was incorporated as the City of Miami Gardens in 2003. In 2008, Oliver was appointed to the Miami Gardens City Council. He served in this capacity until 2012 when he was elected as the second Mayor of Miami Gardens. He is currently serving his second term.

Oliver is a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Miami Gardens. Oliver has one son Oliver Gilbert the IV.


If being Mayor is not enough, Oliver is an influential leader and member of various local and national organizations.

He is the Immediate Past President and Member of the Executive Board of the African American Mayors Association, a Board Member of the National League of Cities, Advisory Board Member of the United States Conference of Mayors, Executive Committee Member of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization, and a BME Community Leader.

He is also a member of the Leadership Florida Cornerstone Class XXXVI; member of North County Citizen's Association; the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University National Alumni Association; the Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; and Miami Fellows – Class V.


Oliver Gilbert understands that our faith-based institutions are a vital connection for the community.

Oliver maintains strong relationships with leaders across all faiths and will continue to work with them to ensure we have the ability to worship in a safe and comfortable environment.




Mayor Oliver Gilbert’s determination has led to the development of many recreational spaces and attractions that have put Miami Gardens on the map as a leading tourist destination.

From Hard Rock Stadium, where South Florida will host the 2020 Super Bowl, to Top Golf, to a bigger and better Jazz in the Gardens Festival, these first-class tourist attractions, and events have left long term economic and social benefits for the residents of Miami Gardens.


Mayor Oliver Gilbert helped create the unprecedented business boom that has improved the quality of life and opportunity for Miami Gardens residents.

Amazon, Marshalls, Waffle House, Starbucks, and many other brand name restaurants and retailers have opened thousands of square feet of commercial and Industrial space within the city.


Mayor Oliver Gilbert was a leading force behind the substantial renovations at Buccaneer Park, Bunche Park, and the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex.

He has ensured our families, kids, and seniors can maintain a healthy lifestyle by having access to recreational programs. Miami Gardens residents are now able to participate in a multitude of activities at these and other city facilities.
